The King's Fate

Hello my book loving family!!! Oh my gosh how I have missed blogging . . . and reading.  Seriously lol.  After achieving my Bachelors in Healthcare Administration, and working full time in a hospice (which is my second passion), I have had to find time to read lol.  But, enough about that, let's get down to business.  Oh how I have missed you.

I met Rissa Blakely through my friend EF Rose through Facebook when she fan girled over Shattered Lives lol.  I figured I would give it a try, and after reading her books and getting to know her through Facebook, I absolutely adore her.  She funny and she is serious about her writing.  When she announced about The King's Fate and how it is completely out of her norm, I was intrigued.  Why?  Because it had paranormal beings.  Yes, my favorite formula for a great cannot put down the book . . . book.

Now, to introduce my review on it, let me educate you a little bit if this is all new to you.  The main character, Leolin Kyffin, an incubus.  What is an incubus? Here is where the education comes in: an incubus (male) and a succubus (female) are demon like creatures who can have sex with a sleeping human.  That's right, they can enter someone's dream and can create an unforgettable moment.  Fancy.

Anyways, back to the point.  Leolin is married to a succubus, Louise Bach, who cannot have children.  So Leo finds a vampire and enters her dream and conceives a child.  This, right here is a big no-no in this world.  From the ruling of King Zachariah.

I'm almost done explaining because I don't want to give too much away lol.  So Leo and Louise plot to kill King Zachariah.  Well, plans do not go to well, and Leo plots revenge.  He enters the King's dream as his unborn child and creates what he believes what his son would look like as a grown man.  Thus, begins a whirlwind of different happenings.

The book consists of a lot of male on male sex scenes.  I am all a out different characters and the way they live.  Another reason why I love this book.  It's different and interesting, and it is hard to literally put down because you want to know what happens next.  I love The Black Dagger Brotherhood, I love the Fever series, I love the Merry Gentry series.  To have a book that focuses mainly on an incubus is new to me, and I love it.  To add this to my list of fairies and vampires, and others.

Thank you Rissa for bringing these characters into our world, and to expose us to new beginnings!!!

Make sure you give her love on her facebook

Gideon - Jacquelyn Frank

YAY!!! I'm back!!! Between the holidays, school, packing, moving, computer screen leaking (really) & gone for almost 7 weeks, I am here!!! And I feel like I can breathe lol.

(Frank, 2010)

So, now that I am back, I am able to blog more (heehee), and I have a long list of books that I have read to kill time (sick, waiting, etc).  The first book that I will talk about is Gideon by Jacquelyn Frank.

Ok, so Gideon is the second book in the Nightwalker series.  Jacob is the first book, which I just adore.  Gideon was a little bit more of a tougher read because I was just so in love with Jacob, that it pretty much ruined it for me lol.  But, overall, I enjoyed the book.  Really!!!

(Frank, 2010)
Gideon is the oldest male of the Nightwalker race, and he is a healer.  He claims Magdelegna, the Demon King's sister.  He was so embarrassed by this act that he left the race.  Later on, he is reunited with her, and the love between the two has escalated.  Jacob's wife is pregnant and is attacked and almost killed.  Jacob and Magdelegna are very protective of her and their young.  After the attack, there is a search of who really did the attack, and find out, the suspect was right under their nose the whole time.

Because this book has a lot going on, to keep with my habit, I feel the need to conceal a lot of important parts to make it more intriguing for you fellow readers.

I do recommend this book.  I give it 5 stars because it is very elegantly written.  It is like reading a book from the 1800s and has so much fantasy it is like a vivid dream.

Lover Eternal - J R Ward

Lover Eternal, book #2 in the Blackdagger Brotherhood series is once again, an excellent read. I have mentioned in the Dark Lover blog that I am pretty much addicted to this series. This book is about Rhage, a brother of the Blackdagger Brotherhood who has a curse on him that turns him into a beast-like dragon when he is fighting the Lessers.

With this curse, he is brought down by pain and blindness as well as being sick to his stomach while he recuperates. It took that one time that he was pretty much blind that he met his soul mate.

Mary lived by herself with her neighbor Bella near by, meets a boy named John. Well, Bella is a vampire, but Mary does not know it. There is something about John that kind of urks Bella, so she introduces John to the Brotherhood, bringing Mary along because Mary wants to stay with John, for protection.

While she is at the compound with Bella and John, she meets Rhage, and with Rhage being pretty much blind, but sees just enough, notices that she is near him, and he is enticed by her sound and her . . . scent. Almost immediately, Rhage is infatuated with her. But Mary has problems of her own to take care of before she falls in love . . .

Mary has cancer, and because of this, she refuses to let anyone get close to her. That is the only thing that really bugged me about this book. She has this great guy, who knows her condition, and wants to stay with her and hold her hand and be a shoulder to cry on but she will not allow it and picks fights. I can see protecting oneself, but, to me, it was a little irritating lol.

So . . . with the curse he has, him being in love with a woman who does not want to get close to him, but she wants to get close to him as well but does not allow it, and her condition, the Scribe Virgin shows up and pretty much gives him an ultimatum. Lose his curse or keep the woman he loves. I will just leave it at that . . .

I do recommend this book, and if you love the first one, you will love the others because it gives you a more intimate story of each brother, and each one you will fall in love with and ultimately choose your favorite . . . I already have

                         My garden gives forth,
                         The most beautiful flowers
And now all my neighbors look over,
                         So jealous!
                         They ask how my garden,
                         Has gotten so healthy
I say it's a family secret and I'm not telling
With a laugh I think, family secret indeed
                         For my secret's the family,
                         That's buried beneath

Dark Lover - J R Ward

So, I know that this series is not new, but it is new to me AND I LOVE IT!!! A friend of mine introduced me to this series a month ago and whenever I am in between books I go through withdrawals. So, here is another series that I will be blogging about while I go through the series so for those of you who have not read the series, I hope you enjoy it just as much as I have.

J R Ward has a series called the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is about this group of warriors who fight these other guys known as the lessers. The lessers have a goal, which is getting rid of the Brotherhood. They pretty much sell their soul to the devil, they do not feel pain, they do not age, but their appearance changes. The Brotherhood protects other vampires as well as innocent lives. The Black Dagger Brotherhood consists of Wrath, Rhage, Zsadist, Phury, Tohrment, and Vishous.

Each book, like a lot of other series, is based on each character and their background. So the first one, Dark Lover, is about Wrath. He is the last pure bred in the Brotherhood. While reading this book, I pictured him with Dwayne Johnson's body (because he is freakin HUGE), Zak Bagans head (because he has strong features such as the character) with long black hair (just to give you a little visual0. When one of the brothers asked Wrath to take care of his daughter while she goes through the change (a change usually happens around the age of 25). Wrath was against it. He did not feel like being a babysitter. Well, after the brother has died in a car explosion, Wrath felt like he needed to do it in honor of his brother.

Little did he know, he fell in love with her.

Her name is Beth. She never knew her father. She never knew she had vampire blood in her. She is a reporter for the local paper, and is friends with the police department. There is also a detective (Butch) who has a HUGE thing for her, but she feels nothing for him. So that is where Wrath comes in to take her in and be there for her while she starts going through the change (which was any day). While he is taking care of her, she starts to get to know him a little more personally.

While she is getting to know him, she is getting to know her heritage as well since her father was a part of the Brotherhood as well. The more she gets to know, the less scared she is of what she is about to become.

When you are reading Dark Lover, you are also being introduced to the other brothers, which you get to know through each book. You are introduced to the brothers, characters involved with the lovers that are being brought in (such as Butch who is friends with Beth), Wellsie (who is Tohr's wife), the butler, other lessers, etc.

The thing that sets this series apart from the others that I have collected over the years, is that each chapter, there is different aspects. You have the point of view of the main character, then you have one of the character being brought in, and the point of view of the lessers. This ties everything together in what is happening in each book, and the books are continuous. This is with EVERYBODY in the series.

I hope you will pick up this book, which is the first one of the series and you fall in love with it as well. You have a lot of elements to these books: suspense, mystery, romance, sex, violence, comedy, horror, the list just goes on.

So, if you have just one genre you are into, you will still love these books, because it goes for everybody because of the mix of everything. Enjoy!!!

Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong

(Kathryn Hollinrake)
I admitted in my first blog that I am a big fan of Kelley Armstrong. I have many of her books, but unfortunately, it has taken me awhile to get to them because of other books I have received before this book, and then I had school, I was able to finally pick up. And then it took a month for me to put up the blog about it lol.

Ok, so now I have got you up to speed on why it has taken me a while to pick it up, let's talk
about it shall we?

Paige Winterbourne is back in her second book, Industrial Magic (a sequel to Dime Store Magic). Along with Paige, there is Savannah who Paige has been taking care of since her and Elena tagged team to get the preteen and themselves out of a so-called-dungeon of torture (just getting you guys caught up). In Dime Store Magic, you are also introduced to Lucas, who is Paige's main squeeze.  Ok, now that I got you caught up, lets get into the book.

Teenagers are missing all over the U.S. There  is one in Florida, one in Modesto (which is 45 minutes away from me so of course, I was all excited), and some other areas, just scattered around. Well, the one thing that these teenagers have in common is that they are part of the Cabals. The Cabals are almost like a Mafia. I know right? Ruthless. Well, Lucas' family is part of the Cabals and he was determined not to join. But his father Benicio is going through great lengths just to get Lucas and Paige to help find the person who is doing all of this. They are not the only ones who are brought into this either. There is a famous psychic who talks to the victims, a vampire with a bad attitude, werewolves that are a part of Elena's pack (Troy is divine by the way), and others. This book is just crazy.

I have to admit, this book was kind of slow to get into, but after a while, it started to get really interesting, especially when they started bringing in more people, people with different personalities and . . . species. When you mix all of these people together it gets really interesting, which I cannot tell you because it will actually give away the ending, and that is my rule, I do not hint the end . . .

I have always loved Kelley Armstrong's way of writing, and especially when each book jumps from character to character, but also the books in between the characters, blend them together. This is only book #3, and I have a long ways to go, but I am a dedicated reader so I am really curious on how the characters come along in the future. SSSSHHHHHHH DON'T TELL ME!!!! I like to stay surprised!!!

Overall, I really loved the book, it is different just like my other series that I have collected over the years, which makes it that much more special. It is not like all the other books that I have, and that is why I love her and her books. You get to know the characters and fall in love with them. There is violence, love, mystery, suspense, fantasy, all in one book. Dare you try it?

Have you read her books lately?

Club Dead by Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris . . . the woman who changed what vampires and werewolves are supposed to be. Vampires who do not sparkle but yet give off a vibe of lust. Werewolves who do not have emotional streaks but those who are tough yet gentlemanly.

Club Dead is the third book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. In all
honesty, I do not follow the TV series. I like the books better. Anyways, off topic. Club Dead (or Josephine's) is a club set in Jackson where shifters, were's, vampires, and humans go. It is put under a spell where it is difficult to find, except for those who are in the supernatural families along with their humans.

In the beginning of the book, Bill (Sookie's boy-toy) is very mysterious, and pretty much pisses off Sookie. The next day, Bill has disappeared and Sookie goes about her normal day as a waitress. All of a sudden Eric (whom I love), Pam, and Chow get together to tell Sookie that Bill is missing, and that they think something terrible has happened. Well, Alcide comes along the next day to help her pack and take her to Jackson to help find Bill. Well, the people in Jackson who know Alcide believes that Sookie is his new girlfriend. Alcide takes Sookie to Club Dead to see if she can get any readings on clues to find Bill. That is as far as I am going to say. Now, let's talk characters.

The characters are a real masterpiece. Sookie, a telepath who is a southern charm, is in love with Bill, a vampire. I do not get that much of a vibe off of either one of them. Although, some of the supporting characters I am into. There is Eric who is the Sheriff of the area surrounding Bon Temps. Eric, who is also the owner of Fangtasia, a club in that area. Then you have Alcide, oohhhh, Alcide. He is my new crush in books. This is the first for werewolves for me. He is a sweetheart with a temper to spare. Alcide who has the hots for Sookie, and is waiting for her. Oh boy. Since I do not watch the show, I had to look up to see if Alcide had fit my image. See for yourself to the left heehee. I pictured the body, but the face a little different.

So . . . do I like the book? HELL YEAH!!! I actually do like her writing and her story lines for the last three books that I have read, and I have number 4 sitting on the TV stand waiting for me to read, but I have to give my attention to my other books while I am on vacation lol. I do recommend reading the books. For the first time falling in love with a werewolf, EVER this is a good change for me. Check them out, and give Charlaine a shout out about how good her talent is!!!

H.P. Mallory - Fire Burn & Cauldron Bubble

So, my dear hubster got me a tablet for me as an early "congratulations on finishing your associate's" gift, and the next day, I just started downloading like crazy. The first thing I started looking for was paranormal books that were free. I wanted to download free books on authors I have never tried because at least if I did not like the story, I did not spend money on it, and if I did, I am more than willing to pay for the next book(s). Well, the first book that I downloaded was H.P. Mallory's Fire Burn & Cauldron Bubble.

At first, I did not know what I was getting myself into. A woman by the name of Jolie Wilkins who owns a shop and works with her friend Christa in a little place called L.A. It was a normal day, when all of a sudden a ghost shows up to Jolie, she tries to acknowledge it and then the ghost disappears. Not too long after the ghost disappears, a young man with an English accent shows up by the name of Rand. Jolie and Christa taken back by his handsomeness, asked Jolie if she can help him with some "magic" as in see what is in his future. The first time, there was no luck, so he schedules more meetings, and each time there was some progress, Jolie not thinking she was able to do this, but starts realizing the more she reads into this so called future of Rand, the more she is believing. Then, finally, Rand asks her out to dinner, and starts telling her what she is capable of doing, and that he is a warlock (a male witch).

Jolie, not sure of what Rand is talking about, goes along with it. He asks her and Christa to a house where a man he worked with long ago was killed and would like to know who killed him. With the help of Rand, Jolie was able to astral project to the past and see what happened. Well, she got more than she bargained for. Not only did she see who shot him, but she was able to bring him back to life!!! I KNOW RIGHT?!?!?! Rand, also amazed by her abilities thinking, maybe I should teach her more things that she can do. This can be projecting conversations with him through the mind and change her appearance. Well, the stopped talking for a bit, and a local witch invited her to a party the witch was throwing. She shows up and meets a vampire by the name of Sinjin. He gets under Jolie's skin, but she is still turned on by this vampire. She sees Rand, and finds out that this witch wants Jolie to join her clan and be her employer (master). Well, Rand is not having any of it so he decides he will be Jolie's Master. Well, this does not go very well with the witch and they end up having a duel in the middle of the party, with Rand winning. This is not even half of the book!!!

I do not want to give more information, considering this is an awesome book and I recommend it!!! Does it make you intrigued? Anyways, with witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches and warlocks who are shape-shifters, lots of magic and deceiving, this book is a mixture of everything that a paranormal book lover like me wants!!! Check it out on Kindle or in paperback and give it a whirl!!!

The Harlequin by Laurell K Hamilton

The Harlequin. Book 15 of the Anita Blake series I have to admit, really was not one of my favorites. Although, it was a very good book, but for some reason, the men in her life are becoming more and more like annoying women. "You don't spend enough time with me", "I want this . . . I want that". Stuff that usually drives a man crazy, now I know why it drives them nuts.
Anyways, getting off track. The Harlequin is about these vampires that Marmee Noir created for her to be like "watchmen". If a clan of vampires get out of hand, the Harlequin will let them know.
Well, on a date with Nathanial (uhm, a male stripper who has hair down to his ankles, and lavender eyes. A body to die for. S & M. Sorry, again, getting off topic), Anita receives a package in a movie theater bathroom, with a white mask. Thinking it's from Nathanial, but finding out from Jean-Claude, the Harlequin are keeping their eyes on them considering it is white, they are being observed. Stuff hits the fan, the Harlequin hits their town, and both the Harlequin and Anita's group are staying with their laws, which clashes with the others. Which is a basic lose-lose situation for the both.
I am really trying not to give too much away, because like I have said before, there is a lot that goes on in these books. Long story short, a lot of stuff goes down, and she depends on her faithful partner Edward, who brings along not only his stepson but also a sadistic man who has a record of tearing women apart that has a specific profile. A profile that looks like Anita.
I think I have to stop here. If I go on any further I will give stuff away and I am not that type of person.
There are fight scenes, crazy sex, female-like companions, hot men, the list goes on for what a women can look for in her books.

If you would like more information on her other books, along with her Marry Gentry books you can follow her on Twitter, like her Facebook page, and even take a look at her website and check out some of her graphic novels (that are based on the Anita Blake series).

Day 31: Joshua Skye

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, autumn my favorite season. Most of my stories take place in the fall. My novel, "The Angels of Autumn" (Pink Pepper Press) certainly does. The intrinsic eeriness in this time of year meshes well with my fascination of the paranormal, all those things that go bump in the night. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of my mother telling me scary stories, true stories. Ghosts, ghouls, aliens, and other creepy creatures, her tales crawled with them and I was endlessly enthralled.
It is perhaps no surprise then that I love to tell scary stories as well. I've been writing ever since I can remember and loving it. There's nothing quite like watching someone read one of your stories, their reactions eliciting perhaps a morbid joy. One of my most provocative tales, "Matriz de Madre" (KMS Books LLC) never ceases to freak people out. I've been told I have the kind of sense of humor that grew up in a dark basement. It's an astute observation.
Some of those early tales have been the basis for more mature stories I've written as an adult. My story "Timothy" was first born a long time ago and has haunted me through the years, rewritten many times until the demonic little imp was fully realized in all of his gruesome glory. He has a home now, nestled snugly among other great yarns in "Childhood Nightmares: Under the Bed" from Sirens Call Publications. I've written many stories of childhood terrors but "Timothy" will always have a special place at the proverbial campfire. He really like to scare people, you see.
Adults have fears too, and it is equally fun to invite those to the party. Knowing that yes there really are such things as monsters, and understanding them from an adult's perspective, the things that lurk in the shadows are often times more disturbing from a grown-up's point of view. Its one thing to know that monsters are out there, its quite another to realize what their true intentions are. My stories "Trick" and "Cathy's Treat" in "31 More Nights of Halloween" from Rainstorm Press, explores monsters from both perspectives. The ghoul in "Trick" could very well be Timothy's mischievous brother, while the monsters in "Cathy's Treat" are a parent's worst nightmares. As a parent myself, nothing could be more terrifying.
Do I believe in the paranormal? Absolutely. I've seen ghosts, unidentified flying objects, and I've had strange otherworldly experiences. Many of these things I've experienced make appearances in my stories. A being of light walking across a field is an image that haunts me and my work because I actually saw it as a child. A character in my novel "The Singing Wind" (JMS Books LLC) speaks of just such an experience. Was it a demon? An angel? An Alien? I explore such concepts often in my work perhaps in an attempt to explain what I had seen. That in itself is a frightening idea. What if all authors of the paranormal are trying, through the medium, to explain things they'd actually experienced? Stories take on a more disturbing depth with that in mind.
I think its time to revisit one of my favorite collections of scary stories. "Night Shift" by Stephen King. I love to snuggle down in my bed, pull the covers up to keep the chill at bay, and read a great scary story. Maybe if I read out loud I'll have a few ghostly visitors, it is that time of year after all. Happy Halloween!

Day 28: Emily Fayad - S.A. Swiniarski

First off I want to thank Lacey for inviting me to get involved with her “31 Books of Halloween”.  When Lacey first emailed me about being involved I was really excited.  Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I jumped at the chance to get in on the fun.  But what to write about!  There are so many wonderful books out there it was going to be hard for me to pick just one, but after much consideration I got it.  I decided to pick a book that may not be very well known, written by an author who may also be a new name to many.  The novel I speak of is “Raven” by S.A. Swiniarski and was published by DAW Books, Inc. in 1996.  Before stumbling upon this book, tucked away and all alone on a random book shelf, I had never heard of either the book or its author.  However, after reading the back I was hooked, and had to buy it.  Then after reading it, within a single night, it quickly became one of my favorite books and now I wish to give the author the credit he deserves.  Though I haven’t written a book review in many, many years -  I’m going to give it my best shot.

This novel starts off with us finding the main character, Kane Tyler, waking up in a dark, dismal storm tunnel with a horrible case of amnesia.  He feels weak, scared and very unsure of anything – including who he is and what happened to him.  Finding nothing on his person that would give him any useful clues, except for a lone hotel room key, he stumbles his way to the road above and begins his journey to finding the truth. This journey takes him from one horrifying discovery to another. Kane finds himself faced with a string of shady characters and the realization that nothing is what it seems.  His journey takes us on a path to the truth about who he is, the horrors of what happened to him, the realization of what he must do now and the undeniable reality of what he has become... a vampire.

An excerpt from “Raven” – page 26
“…my subconscious left me with a deep rage and a feeling that I had been in some sense, raped.
“Maybe I don’t want to remember.” I took a deep breath. “Stop talking to yourself in the dark, people will think you’re nuts.”
I groped for the light switch.   A frosty fluorescent flashed a few rattling strobes before it came on.
The bathroom was a mess.  Worst was the bathtub.  The water was black with dirt and blood.  Water had slopped over and drenched the hex-tile floor, streaking it red and brown.”

This novel takes you into the dark realms of paranormal horror – where vampires are real, the lines between good and evil are blurred, and sometimes the only way to get what you want is to become what you fear most.

This is truly a wonderful novel and the author takes a new approach, with new twists, and spins them with a well-known tale.  I want to wish everyone a very scary and wonderful Halloween.
