Day 1: Cat Winchester - Dean Koontz Tribute

I've read a lot of horror books in my time, from the so called master of horror, Stephen King, to English author, James Herbert, and many in between. I enjoyed the books I read (I wouldn't have finished them if I hadn't) but few horror writers have really captured my attention, until Dean Koontz.

I first discovered his books when I was 16 and found Hideaway in my mothers library. After that I made it my mission to read everything that he had written.
So what makes Dean Koontz's books so much more captivating than say Stephen King?
It isn't the plot. I can safely say that both authors use a variety of supernatural creatures, both keep things unpredictable and both keep their plots moving at a face pace, allowing the reader no time to be bored.
So what is the key difference?
For me it comes down to relationships. There are relationships in all books, obviously, but few other horror writers manage to make me interested in the central characters.
Mr Koontz could be said to have a formula in that there is usually a male and female lead character who are either in love, or will fall in love. Not every book, of course, and some books have a whole cast of characters to keep track of. Nonetheless, I take an interest in each character and pairing. It doesn't matter if they are doctors, police officers or waitresses, he gets to the heart of who these people are and makes me care what happens to them.
So when the Big Bad is bearing down, I am worried. When they do something foolish, I am rooting for them to put things right. When escape seems hopeless, I pray that there is some miracle way out that I haven't thought of yet.
When reading most other horror writers, I am interested in the plot, but I don't much care about the characters and in my humble opinion, that is what turns a good writer into an excellent writer. (obviously no one can argue with the success of Stephen King, but this is my own subjective view).
It seems that in the world of Horror, love is often a dirty word. For many years the world of Horror had been dominated by men (despite being started by Mary Shelly) and as in many male dominated areas, there is a fear of girl cooties. It's the same in Sci-fi, thrillers and adventure novels. Love them or loath them, you just have to look at the vitriol aimed at the Twilight series from “true” vampire fans to see how unpopular mixing romance and horror still is.
Nowadays more women are writing horror books and more women are (or will admit to) reading them, so things are changing. Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries series is a good modern example of horror with heart. The relationships change but she never fails to make you care about he characters involved, whether they're getting together, breaking up, or just living life. Still, on the whole, that kind of character based horror is still a rarity.
Even back in the 70s though, Dean Koontz was putting women and relationships front and centre in his books, seemingly unafraid of catching a few girl cooties. Not only that, but his women were strong characters who were central to the plot, not just a love interest for the male hero.
So not only did I care about his characters, I could relate to them.
When it comes to the Big Bad, Dean Koontz almost always goes for a person or people. Even if the events are supernatural, there is a real (fictional) person orchestrating events, or maybe doing the bidding of the supernatural entity. And oh boy, are they ever sleazy! He creates the kind of bad guys that really creep you out, they get under your skin, and would make you shudder if you were ever unfortunate enough to shake hands with one of them. Still, there is logic and a reason behind what they do and however twisted that logic may be, you can see why they do it, even while it repulses you.
Perhaps some of you are thinking that Stephen King's books are far superior because he doesn't dwell on relationships or people (or even for many other reason) but sales figured don't lie. Dean Koontz is number 17 on the list of all time best selling authors. Stephen King number 19.
Sadly, unlike Mr King, Mr Koontz had had little success with big screen adaptations of his work.
With Stephen King (just off the top of my head) I can think of The Stand, The Tommyknockers, Salem's Lot, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption and the Shining, all of which are outstanding adaptations.
For Dean Koontz, not a single adaptation has come anywhere close to the book that it is based on.
I don't know why this is the case and there are probably multiple reasons for it but in out media saturated society, I think this is the reason (or one of the reasons) why everyone knows of Stephen King and he is revered as a master of the genre, while many people I meet haven't even heard of Dean Koontz (before I tell them about him, that is!).

Bloodfever, a Mackayla Lane novel, book #2

Karen Marie Moning has brought on, yet again, a good story to the Mackayla Lane series. Ask anyone, I love series, and this series is the one of many that I read. I have them all, but only read up to #2. I know, it has been a while, but, hey, I am doing awesome in school and miss b is doing awesome in expanding her horizons :)
Anywho, the text in the back of the book says:

"In her fight to stay alive, Mackayla must find the Sinsar Dubh - a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over the worlds of both the Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she can't trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and powerful men: V'lane, the immortal Fae Prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is dangerous.
For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between teh two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them."

How can you resist? Yeah, Barrons is an ass . . . but, man, he is hot. I recommend this book to all the females (and males) out there who love reading about women kicking ass, got fae's, mystery, blood and gore.
To let everyone know, you cannot read this book or any other books in this series unless you read the first one of the series: Darkfever. I got Bloodfever for my first book of the series and I was completely lost. So of course, I had to read the first one, and I LOVE IT!!!
If you like Laurell K Hamilton's Merry Gentry series, and you like the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison you will love this series . . . fae's and magic . . . what more can you ask for?
SPOILER ALERT!!! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS FAR SKIP DOWN TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH!!! Mac and Barrons almost go at it, but not quite . . . that is the only thing that is missing . . . I'm rooting for the both of them to get together . . . they already fight like they are an old married couple . . . hehehehehe

Ok, now that that has been lifted off my chest, here is more information on the Fever Series along with her Highlander Series: http://www.karenmoning.com/kmm/
You also do not want to miss out on her facebook, twitter and her blog!!!

Ok everyone, I hoped you enjoyed my post!!! Hopefully the next one won't take so long hehehehe!!!

Valentine's Day & Zak Bagans

I have to say, I've always been a fan of Ghost Adventures ever since season 1. They're funny, compassionate, respectful and all around great guys.
When I found out that Zak Bagans was writing a book, I was overjoyed. A combination of my love for books and Zak Bagans was perfect.
One of my wonderful step-daughters gave me Dark World for my 30th birthday (it was on the 7th, recently, I know), & i ripped into that book like it was nobody's business lol. I could not put it down (well, except for when I couldn't see anything lol).
Here it is, near valentine's day, have Dark World in my hand, conversation hearts near me, reading & getting a sugar high at the same time.
The thing I love about Dark World, is that he stays true to the haunting's they have encountered. He describes the site, he tells us how he felt, what he touched, what he saw, the questions he asked himself, etc. He goes on to tell us about what we haven't seen on the show, because they could only fit so much evidence in a 1 hour show.
He goes on to explain the debunking, the different kinds of spirits, different kinds of equipment, and shows the skeptics what can be done to get the reality out there: THERE ARE GHOSTS!!!
It's a special book to me, something I will always treasure (being a fan of Ghost Adventures, and it being a present).
Now, I know a lot of you out there are saying, "of course she's going to rave about his book, she a HUGE fan." That's not the case, the book is personal to him and the fans. It's true, it's passionate, it's addicting, it's one of a kind.
So here is what I have to say:
If you are a fan . . . get it
If you are a believer . . . get it
If you are a skeptic . . . GET IT
So, make sure you catch Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel Fridays & Saturday nights.

Happy New Year's, New Book For A New Year!!!

Before I start on a brand new blog, I wanted to just say a very happy birthday to Rae Hachton & Marcus Marbles :). The author of Pretty In Black and one of the characters of the book celebrated their birthdays on NEW YEARS EVE!!! Whoop Whoop!!!

When asked to be a part of the book tour for Pretty In Black, I was ecstatic!!! I never participated in a book tour, and didn't really know how to go about it lol. The moment I recieved Pretty In Black in the mail, I cracked it open once I got it out of the box :). The book pulled me in at the first page, and instantly had a crush on Marcus.
Ellie, a high school student, was on the cheerleading team, popular, had a boyfriend. But she lost all interest until her sisters murder. Her mom lived in a trailor park with a drunk, and her dad left the family shortly after the death of her sister. She met Marcus when she decided to end her life in a cemetary. Ellie thought it was all a dream when Marcus showed up and her wrists weren't covered in blood.

Everywhere Ellie went, Marcus was right there. Throughout the book, Ellie falls more and more in love with Marcus. Well, who wouldn't? He takes her to a private opera, plays the violin, says the right things, and overall very romantic :).

Marus is one of the characters every woman young or old dreams about. I crush him just like I crush Jacob from Jaquelin Frank (did I spell her name right?).

But of course, Marcus has a secret. He is undead. Part of a society Corvidae. And Ellie, found out that she is a Corvidae hunter. It's like William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, a tale of 2 star-crossed lovers.

Marcus is infatuated with Ellie, and Ellie is in love with Marcus. They want to put all the trouble aside in order to be together. But will the Corvidae?

You must check out Pretty In Black and her 2nd book Black Satin (May 28th, 2012) on goodreads.com

A Lick of Frost

Have I ever mentioned that I am a HUGE fan of Laurell K Hamilton's? Well, I'm telling you now: I AM A HUGE FAN!!!
Book 6 of the Merry Gentry Series "A Lick of Frost" was interesting. Something was always happening!!!
So, the main point up until now is that Merry Gentry who is half human half fairy, has a mission: to get pregnant first in order to get the throne. the queen is her aunt, Andais.
So through all these books, you're being introduced to new characters. First she has her wing men (Doyle, Frost, Rhys & Galen (I might be forgetting someone) ). Anyways, she has also brought in a goblin Kitto, Sholto, and also Mistral.
Now, she has bedded these guys plus a couple more. Not only is she trying to get pregnant, but these guys plus the faerie seethen is gaining power. Power that has been taken away centuries ago. (It's like one big soap opera for the housewife . . . hehehe).
Ok, now that I brought you up to date I will go on to the book. Book 5 Mistral's Kiss, Merry's wingmen get charged for rape of a seelie in her uncle's court. While talking to the lawyers, she is also talking to her Uncle Taranis through a mirror. All the lawyers & officers are starting to realize that he isn't all there in the head. And before they know it, Taranis is attacking everyone in the room through the mirror.
Doyle (pronounced Dol) is the one actually injured while others were able get away with some burns and scratches.
She then goes on to make a deal with the Goblin twins (Holly and Ash) to sleep with them so they can gain power.
When they met up (Merry, her men, Holly, Ash & the Red Caps . . . you'll have to read about them :) ) something happens. Frost, Holly, Ash, and the other guys (just some), were knocked out. But Frost didn't recover. He ended up turning into a Stag. Which he didn't really die, he's just in another form. But will return between a few years and a century).
Merry is so upset that she had lost Frost, she goes out to get some air.
And I will leave it at that. But I will tell you this. Yes, she finally does find out she pregnant. WITH TWINS!!! But you will also have to find out about this pregnancy. There's a HUGE twist ;).
Laurell K Hamilton's books are always a page turner. There are Anita Blake fans, and there are Merry Gentry fans. I am a fan of both :).
But coming from someone who is not patient, I am finally happy to find out that she is pregnant and next in line to be Queen. After book 6, and no patience, that goes to show how good of a series this is.
I totally recommend this book if you like mystery, fantasy and sex.

You can check out her other books on her website.
Also, don't forget to "like" her facebook and follow her on Twitter :)
